Inspired by nature, driven by tradition and digital technology. To celebrate its first EU presidency and to continue with the Estonian centenary, Estonia presents itself to Belgium, Luxembourg and the world starting from this summer until the end of 2018 with an exceptional cultural programme!

Gigantic wooden megaphones RUUP by Birgit Õigus will bring the voices of the Estonian forest to the city of Brussels. Digital street art figures from a hundred years ago by Edward von Lõngus and NOAR.eu art platform invite passers-by to take a leap to today’s Europe via a specially developed app. In the Musical Instruments Museum a temporary exhibition shows kannel and other traditional instruments while strolling through a pure scenography of Estonian nature and sounds. The programme for 2017 also shows how music in all its facets is part of the Estonian soul; from the National Male Choir performing master of silence Arvo Pärt and Veljo Tormis, to Estonian Jazz-icons Maria Faust and Peedu Kass Momentum, to Maarja Nuut who combines traditional dance tunes, songs, and stories with live electronics. And there is so much more! Through this programme Estonia wants to transmit a clear message of ‘unity through balance’. Staying close to nature and traditions, protecting what is vital on one hand, while being open for continuous development and grasping opportunities in a digitalised society, is a challenge for Estonia and Europe.

In 2018, Estonia celebrates its 100th birthday

Estonia wishes to share its birthday with you in Estonia and abroad. The programme includes best parts of Estonian culture, IT, science and enterprises.

Celebrations will kick off in April 2017 to mark a century since Estonia’s administrative borders took their current form, will continue throughout 2018 and 2019, and come to a grand close on the 2nd February 2020 when the 100th anniversary of the Tartu Peace Treaty will be honoured.

This is a celebration we can all take part in and it is up to us to make it memorable.

Estonia will be also holding the presidency of the EU Council in the second half of 2017. Approximately 20 high-level meetings, visits, conferences and 200+ other presidency-related events will take place in Estonia during this period.
